Brief Biography:

I gained a First Class Honours degree in (Mathematical) Physics from Imperial College, London and a Doctorate from the Department of Mathematics, King's College, London, under the supervision of Prof. Peter West FRS. My long term career has been mathematics and its applications, and I am an Associate Professor (and a Reader) at the University of Bristol. I am a member of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory, which has interests spanning artificial intelligence, machine vision and a wide variety of applications of these technologies: we are embedded in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Bristol. My personal research interests are in artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning. Within this discipline, interests include probabilistic graphical models and kernel-based learning methods, algorithm design, and the development of novel data analysis methods. A core interest in recent years has been the application of machine learning techniques in bioinformatics, particularly medical bioinformatics.

PhD Opportunities:

PhD funding for projects in our areas of interest is available from a number of sources:

  • Departmental Training Awards (DTAs).
  • In addition there are further Bristol university scholarships for both UK/EU candidates and overseas (non-UK and non-EU) candidates.
  • China Scholarship Council awards.
  • Occasionally we also have other PhD studentships which are open to nationals of any country and are linked to a specific project.

    Postdoctoral Opportunities:

    For very well qualified candidates we support applications for Fellowship awards from a variety of research sponsors. Aside from Research Council supported Fellowships, exceptionally talented researchers would be eligible for the university's Vice Chancellor's Fellowships.
